Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener that is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is commonly used in diet soft drinks, sugar-free and "no sugar added" food products, and as a table-top sweetener. Aspartame is also one of the sugar substitutes used by people with diabetes. 
Aspartame is a subject of public controversy due to possible health risks. In 2023, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified aspartame as a possible carcinogen to the liver (Group 2B) based on limited evidence. However, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake (ADI) of aspartame at 40 mg/kg. 
Aspartame is safe for the general population to consume within the ADI, except for individuals with phenylketonuria, a rare genetic disorder that prevents proper metabolism of phenylalanine, a component of aspartame.
